Chapter nineteen began the presentations for this week about creating strategies to measure lengths, widths, mass, etc. The group presented various techniques on how to measure such as; time, money, the amount of candy eggs that fit into a small carton, and using footsteps to measure different lengths. This groups’ activities were really fun! I enjoyed all of them. Especially because we work in groups an we get to think together about choosing strategies. My favorite was measuring the lengths with our footsteps, because it requires you to physically complete the task and then compare them. I like the part at the end since we measured the tapes on the floor and then we can explain why one is longer or shorter than the other. The next group presented chapter twenty, which was about the concepts that make up geometry. I enjoyed learning about geometry until I was in high school because in elementary I did not appreciate what it was. Also, in high school my teacher made geometry more amusing by allowing us to complete projects that pushed our learning to a higher level. One cool thing from this presentation was that I realized how geometry can be separated into levels of thinking (depending on where the students are). The activity I mostly enjoyed from this group was making object (houses, swans, rabbits, etc.) out of geometric shapes. It requires your full attention in order to figure it out. The final presentation was about chapters twenty-one and twenty-two. These were about analyzing and interpreting data presented. The presentation explained the many types of graphs out there that can be used. I loved how Alexis and Anna created a graph that the whole class can participate in and at the end have a discussion about the functions of that graph provides us with and interpreting the information as a class. The activity I mostly liked was the cup toss because I wanted to hurry and toss it quickly so that you write your fraction. Awesome job for today’s presenters!
